Today is 2nd January, and it is a wonderful day indeed! It marks the illustrious celebration of Science Fiction Day, honouring the works and authors of science fiction. Most notably, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, Michael Crichton, and Isaac Asimov have significantly impacted the genre of science fiction and influenced future generations of writers. Their works have stood the test of time and remain some of the most beloved pieces in literature.

National Science Fiction Day is celebrated internationally. January 2nd was chosen to tribute Isaac Asimov, a famed science fiction writer born on 2nd January 1920. He published the first science fiction story in 1942 and later coined the term ‘science-fiction’.

National Science Fiction Day was founded by author and editor, Forrest J. Ackerman. He established the day to pay homage to the science fiction authors who have made a lasting impression in the literary world. Indeed, their works have been adapted into successful films, television series, video games and more. While many struggle to comprehend science fiction’s deeper meanings, the genre has been a pillar of innovation in modern society. It is an opportunity to recognize those who have contributed to the genre. It is a time to celebrate our collective imagination and the impact it has had on history and the future.
